What Is Accessible Authentication (Enhanced) (WCAG 3.3.9)?

Modified on: Fri, 15 May, 2026 at 8:45 PM

Summary

Accessible Authentication (Enhanced) (WCAG 3.3.9) strengthens login accessibility by eliminating recognition-based challenges entirely, ensuring authentication does not rely on interpreting images or similar tasks.

Overview

This is a stricter version of the 3.3.8 criterion, where the requirements are the same, but except CAPTCHA. You are not allowed to require the user to recognize objects or their own content on AAA level. Recognizing street signs, for instance, might pose an issue for people who live in a country with different street sign designs.

Restriction at AAA Level
