Why it’s important

1

Keywords in Activity Plan moved into/dropped out of the top three positions

You are notified if keywords in an Activity Plan have moved into or out of the top three positions in search results compared to 30 days ago.

If your keywords have moved into the top three positions, you can share this success with your team or manager. If your keywords have moved out of the top three, you can go to your Activity Plan to troubleshoot and improve your rankings.

According to an industry study, the first three positions in search results get 75,1% of all clicks. This means that moving into or dropping out of the top three could have a significant impact on your traffic.

2

Visibility score of Activity Plan increased above /decreased below your competitors

You are notified if the Visibility Score of an Activity Plan has increased above or decreased below your competitors compared to 30 days ago.

If your Activity Plan is performing better than your competitors, you can share this success with your team or manager. If your Activity Plan is performing worse than your competitors, you can go to your Activity Plan to troubleshoot and improve your rankings. You can also go to the Competitor Analysis feature to learn more about how you compare to your competitors.

Search Engine Visibility is an index number representing the amount of estimated traffic your site could receive from all keywords monitored in an Activity Plan. The higher the score, the more traffic you could receive.

3

Review new low-value backlinks

You are notified if you have gained low-value backlinks in the last 30 days.

From the insight, you can go to a full list of low-value backlinks so that you can review them. You can then decide to download this list and disavow them in Google’s or Bing’s disavow tools.

Low-value backlinks are links to your site from a domain that is already linking to your site or links that have a low Trust Score (a measure of how trustworthy the site is, on a scale from 0-100, based on the number of trusted domains that link back to it).

Having low-value backlinks to your site can decrease your site’s trustworthiness and thereby your rankings.

4

Connect Siteimprove to Google Search Console

You are notified if you have not integrated to Google Search Console for the selected site.

From the insight, you can learn more about the benefits of connecting to Google Search Console and go to the setup page.

Connecting Siteimprove to Google Search Console gives you access to data that allows you to carry out detailed keyword research and identify top-performing keywords and pages across devices and countries.

Connecting also gives you access to an additional insight that notifies you when we discover keywords that could bring you a significant amount of traffic to your site (see insight 9).

5

Reclaim lost high-value backlinks

You are notified if you have lost high-value backlinks in the last 30 days.

From the insight, you can go to a list of lost backlinks and the domain they originated from so that you can reach out to the domain owner and reclaim them.

High-value backlinks are links to your site from a domain with a high Trust Score (a measure of how trustworthy the site is, on a scale from 0-100, based on the number of trusted domains that link back to it).

Having high-value backlinks to your site can increase your site’s trustworthiness and thereby your rankings.

We flag keywords that are either:

  • a branded keyword where your competitors could be ranking higher than you
  • a long-tail keyword with little competition
  • a keyword with high search volume where your ranking page is near the top search results.

Note: Keyword suggestions from this insight are based on estimated traffic and performance.

7

Submit XML sitemap for your website

You are notified if your website does not have an XML sitemap.

From the insight, you can learn more about sitemaps and download a static sitemap which can be submitted to Google.

A sitemap is a fundamental part of optimizing your site’s SEO. Essentially, it's a list of the pages you want search engines to find and crawl so your pages appear in search results.

While a sitemap does not guarantee higher search rankings, it makes it easier for search engines to locate your site and we recommend you add one as best practice.

You are notified if you have pages that duplicate a target page.

In the insight you can review pages that duplicate a target page and decide whether to add meta tags or edit the content.

If you have pages with similar content, they could be making it harder for your most important pages to rank in search.

We flag pages that are at least 40% similar to your target pages. We only flag pages that are missing the following meta tags which tell Google how to respond to them:

  • no-index
  • hreflang
